YOU ARE NOT A GADGET

Jaron Lanier

Modern digital technologies and online platforms can limit human individuality and creativity.
Lanier argues that systems driven by algorithms, social media, and collective thinking often reduce people to data points,
weakening personal expression and responsibility.
Lanier emphasizes that technology should serve to enhance human dignity and creativity,
rather than reshape humans to fit the constraints of machines.

I wanted to visually reflect the book’s critique of how digital systems can blur or compress individual identity.

I used a cool, digital teal color palette to evoke the cold and impersonal atmosphere often associated with technological environments. To further explore this idea, I generated dozens of AI images based on a single prompt and composited them together so that their forms became ambiguous and difficult to distinguish.
This process mirrors the way large-scale digital systems aggregate data from many sources, often merging individual expressions into a single, indistinct result. By visually blending multiple images into one unclear form, the sequence suggests how identity and originality can become obscured within digital culture.
